Strategies for High School Students with Disabilities in the General Education Classroom

This workshop will describe the steps in creating a culture of high expectations for students with disabilities. These steps include establishing a district-wide intervention system, training school-based intervention teams to implement problem-solving approaches, and building effective co-teaching partners trained to provide rigorous and relevant learning opportunities for students with special needs. Participants will learn about strategies that include collaboration between middle schools and high schools to begin the transition process during the 8th grade year; structural approaches such as small learning communities; and how to obtain extra resource allocations geared toward transitioning students with special needs. The presenter also will focus on leadership imperatives and instruction modifications. The workshop is based on the International Center’s resource kit, Strategies for High School Students with Disabilities in the General Education Classroom.
