NEW! - Connecting Successful Practices to Next Practices and the Role of Empowerment

Education insiders and outsiders are calling for improvement in the way we educate our children. There seems to be synergy on both sides for change, so why isn’t it moving faster, and where are the results? We are told we need to use research-based best practices in this work and then we are informed that we must innovate — aren’t these directives in conflict with each other? This presentation shares the role that empowerment plays in moving from best practices to next practices, along with strategies that can help us to be more creative in our work.

This DVD is a presentation from the 2010 Model Schools Conference by Ray McNulty which runs 60 minutes and is available in the online store for $95.

NEW! - The Challenge — Preparing Students for the 21st Century in 20th Century Schools

Technological innovations are emerging that will fundamentally impact what students must know, be able to do, and be like. Today’s students, who are natives to the technological world, will adapt to these changes easier than adults. Dr. Daggett provides vivid examples of some innovations and shows why the pressure of increased global competition means we must learn to use this new technology very effectively. The future of our students and this nation hangs in the balance.

Quadrant D Leadership is situation-specific and comes into play when there is a need for direction or action. This presentation describes all aspects of the Quadrant D Leadership Framework: authoritative, creative, collaborative, and adaptive.

Recent and pending federal legislation is driving low performing schools to adopt a school turnaround model. What does school turnaround mean? How do you do it? What are the implications? Components of School Excellence from the Nation's Most Successful Schools

The International Center for Leadership in Education continues to study both the nation’s most successful schools and the most rapidly improving schools. While there is no one formula for improving schools, the International Center has identified eight Components of School Excellence that schools typically address to achieve rigor, relevance, and relationships for all students. Dr. Daggett provides an overview of these components and explains how any school can make substantial improvement by addressing the components.

Integrating Academics, CTE, the Arts, and Health/Physical Education

Creating an interdisciplinary curriculum that offers instruction in applying a wide range of skills and knowledge is central to the success of many high performing schools. This presentation focuses on integrating workplace skills (taught in CTE courses), the arts, health, and physical education into academic instruction and on integrating academics in all classes. Dr. Daggett describes why curriculum integration is so important, how to do it, and the positive results. He also introduces the Institute for 21st Century Leadership, created jointly by ACTE, Successful Practices Network, and International Center to assist leaders in addressing curriculum integration.

Meeting the Needs of Special Education Students

Since 2003, the Special Education Institute has assisted school districts and state education agencies in implementing initiatives focused on improving the performance of students with disabilities. This presentation shares what has been learned in the past 5½ years. What district strategies work best in increasing achievement for students receiving special education services and why? What dilemmas do districts face, and how do they resolve them? What are the most common missteps? A screening tool is shared so that viewers can evaluate where their own districts stand on the issues.

Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships and the Human Brain

To date, little has been done to explore how the rigor-relevance-relationship model of learning is explained by human brain function. Using an information processing system perspective, this presentation begins to explain the underlying neuroanatomical relationship to the three Rs. Dr. Nussbaum helps viewers better understand the basics of the brain, how brain function can be used to shape learning and education, and how to promote a healthy brain across the lifespan. This presentation underscores the integration of education and learning into health and highlights the long-term positive health benefits from lifelong learning.

Literacy — The Key to Success

In our dynamic and high-tech economy, where jobs for the unskilled are disappearing, all students must become lifelong learners. The single greatest competency they will need for future success is literacy in general and reading skills in particular. This presentation shares the nation’s most successful practices for achieving this critically important goal for all students.

Rigor and Relevance

Rigor alone will not lead all students to high achievement levels. Highly successful schools have rigorous curricula that also incorporate real-world relevance. This presentation provides an in-depth look at the Rigor/Relevance Framework, created by the International Center, which has become a cornerstone of curriculum and instruction for schools throughout the world. Two additional R’s, which are also critical to maximizing student success, are described: relationships and reflective thought on what is being taught and learned.
